The Referendum Myth PDF Print E-mail

One of the biggest myths is that 70% of the James Bay Cree supported the new development via the Paix des Braves agreement in a referendum. Several votes were held on different days with communities being asked different questions. Results in communities were announced before other communities voted.

Only 49% of Cree participated in the referendum, therefore actual votes cast in favour represent just 34% of the Cree community. Cree working on projects for HQ were not given time off to vote. This process for this so-called referendum would not be considered valid anywhere in Canada or the United States.

A subsequent referendum was held in November 2006 in the three communities most affected by the diversion project. This referendum was specifically about the Rupert River diversion and 81% percent of the voters were opposed to the diversion.
